By: Nathan Roshawn | From: TrueRants Network Our society has created such amazing technology, made miraculous medical breakthroughs, and have had amazing times of compassion, love, and support for our fellow man. For example, the millions of dollars and volunteer hours that we donate every time a huge disaster occurs on this planet. However, we still fail to see that responding to situations with violence just creates more chaos, and slides us further away from the solution.
Just this week, the residents of Baltimore, MD, less than an hour drive from the nations Capitol, in a frenzy of violence left a path of destruction much like a hurricane. The reasoning, because a 25 year old man with dark colored skin dies while in police custody. The news of this is disheartening and could indicate things may need to be tweaked in the justice system. However, taking to the streets to destroy property, rob your neighbor, loot neighborhood businesses, and assault city police and fellow citizens, seems a bit barbaric and counter productive. Let us not forget that the greatest change for the greatest good emerges when we take our egos and anger out of it. It has never been the war or destructive rioting that has brought us to the solutions we seek. It is only when we peacefully but directly express our demands that change is made. Remember, The Million Man March, The Bus Boycotts, The Sit-Ins, The Salt March, and Flowers Vs. Guns. These were all non violent, direct-action movements that produced huge change. We have the power as citizens to make huge changes in this world if we just change our mindset. Let's stop viewing the government as a separate entity, because it is not! Let's stop viewing other ethnicities as foreign invaders, because they are not! We label and category everything and everyone which makes us feel separate from each other, which we are not! When we stop seeing each other as "Those guys" we realize the connection we all share, and that the decisions we make affect us all in some way. |
